My favourite Café in the whole of Vienna. It's opposite the Imperial Hotel, whose Café has been closed 3x.
We walked in here, and the waiter greeted us - surprise number 1.
When I asked if he had a table for 2, he asked if we would like smoking or non-smoking - surprise number 2. And then he said: "This way, please!" - surprise number 3.
After bringing us menus, and asking if we would like something to drink - surprise number 4, he suggested, as a window seat was available that we might like to sit there - surprise number 5.
After ordering Tafelspitz (boiled beef, you do have to cut the fat off 'yourself' !) which was served with chive sauce and horseradish relish, and these very noodle -looking grated potatoes (very tasty, and nothing like noodles), and Spinachstrudel, another tasty number - surprise number 6, we had the most excellent fortune of ordering delicious Austrian wine, surprises 7 and 8.
(I don't want to knock their wine industry, but... It obviously grew out of their vinegar production. Either that, or they eat so much flour that vinegar is needed to digest it.)
I ordered a St. Laurent from Klosterneuburg (which I'd visited the week before, but being the driver didn't do any tasting), the description of which turned out to be correct: berry aromas, a hint of pepper, tones of chocolate. Perfect. And also got lucky with a white (Morillon - Chardonnay) from a nearby district - Wachau.
